The program helps academic institutions and awarding bodies to identify material which has been copied from the Internet. It checks pieces of work against freely available information services on the Internet, and against previously submitted work.

This prevents students from simply copying and pasting information from the Internet into their coursework and can discourage students from buying essays from online paper mills. It also works to prevent collusion between students.

Turnitin is used in thousands of institutions in over 50 countries protecting over seven million students worldwide; approximately 60% of UK universities use Turnitin.
